In 1846 the US Government established Fort Marcy on the high ground overlooking their new territory and Capital, Santa Fe. This site was chosen for its strategic vantage point overlooking the city. It is still today the "high ground" overlooking the Capital of New Mexico, the Jemez Mountains to the west, the Sandia and Ortiz Mountains to the south and the ski basin views of the Sangre De Christo Mountains to the northeast.
